چکیده

Disappearance rates of intracisternally administered H-norepinephrine and activities of tyrosine hydroxylase were examined in the rabbit in five brain regions (telencephalon, hypothalamus, midbrain, medulla-pons, and cerebellum) and in three cord regions (cervical, thoracolumbar, and lumbosacral) 2 weeks after section of the carotid sinus and aortic nerves. Mean blood pressure rose by 29% and heart rate by Yl% in the animals with neurogenic hypertension. Endogenous catecholamine concentrations in the eight regions examined were not altered by denervation. In the thoracolumbar region of the spinal cord, Hnorepinephrine turnover and tyrosine hydroxylase activity were increased approximately twofold in hypertensive rabbits. We suggest that these changes reflect increased physiological activity of bulbospinal noradrenergic neurons and that this increase may mediate the rise in arterial pressure or heart rate that follows sinoaortic denervation. The turnover of H-norepinephrine increased in the hypothalamus of denervated animals; tyrosine hydroxylase activity remained unchanged in this region.

Participation of central noradrenergic neurons in arterial baroreceptor reflexes in the rabbit. A study with intracisternally administered 6-hydroxydopamine.

Rabbits were given intracistemal injections of 6-hydroxydopamine (6OH-DA) that caused selective ablation of central noradrenergic neurons without damaging peripheral sympathetic nerves. Administration of 6-OH-DA (600 yxg/kg, intracistemally) to normal rabbits produced a permanent bradycardia of about 30%, which was initiated centrally and mediated mainly through the vagus, and caused a brief re...

Tonic and reflex control of the cardio-respiratory system by neurons in the ventral medulla

To investigate the channels and neurotransmitters in the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) oblongata that are responsible for the maintenance of sympathetic tone and cardio-respiratory reflex regulation. Microinjections of excitant amino acid (glutamate, 100 nl, 100 mM), calcium channel blockers, agonists and antagonists were made throughout the VLM in anaesthetized rats. Arterial blood pressure, sym...

Arterial baroreceptor reflex function in the conscious rabbit after brainstem lesions coinciding with the A1 group of catecholamine neurons.

We have studied arterial baroreeeptor reflexes in the conscious rabbit after bilateral electrolytic lesions of the ventrolateral medulla, coinciding with the Al group of catecholamine cells. Baroreflex function was determined from the changes induced in heart period and distal aortic blood flow in response to graded alterations in mean arterial pressure produced by inflation of balloon occluder...
